Atlanta rapper 2 Chainz has been ubiquitous on the hip-hop landscape this year. He adds the common-man touch to Kanye West’s skeletal “Mercy” (Pusha T and ’Ye rep Audemars Piguet and Margiela; 2 Chainz rocks Polo). He dances up on Nicki Minaj on her skittery, aggressive “Beez in the Trap.” He even brings some weight to Kreayshawn’s ridiculous “Breakfast (Syrup).” Other artists may fux with weird beats, irony or dissonance, but a verse from 2 Chainz (usually on the simple joys of sex, smoking, drinking and being loud) is 2012’s go-to fix to bring a high-flown track back down to earth. Now, after 10 years of grinding and guesting, 2 Chainz is stepping into the spotlight with this tour to support his August solo release, Based on a T.R.U. Story (Def Jam). Everybody loves a Horatio Alger story, and 2 Chainz’s is one – a success based on hard work and honest ambition that rebukes the never-look-like-you-care ethos of an Odd Future generation. – Jessica Bryce Young
