Thursday, Dec. 20 – Gabby Douglas Book Signing
Orlando Public Library
101 E. Central Blvd.
If you don’t believe that great things come in small packages, you’ve obviously never watched Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas in action. At the 2012 London Olympics, the 16-year-old, barely 5-foot-tall gymnast, nicknamed “Flying Squirrel” after her impressive aerial routine on the uneven bars, not only snagged two gold medals as part of the über-popular Fab 5 USA women’s gymnastics team, but she also became the first African-American to win gold in the gymnastics all-around. After leaving London, the Olympic hype sprung wide open for Douglas, as she appeared on the covers of Sports Illustrated and Time magazines and sat for prime-time TV interviews. The release of Douglas’ first book earlier this month, Grace, Gold and Glory: My Leap of Faith, lands her in Orlando this week. Douglas will meet fans and sign copies of her book, a memoir of stories about her childhood, her beginnings in gymnastics, her struggles with racial bullying and, of course, her exhilarating successes at the 2012 London Olympics. – Aimee Vitek
