131st Silver Spurs Rodeo returns to Kissimmee

Friday-Saturday, May 31-June 1 – 131st Silver Spurs Rodeo

7:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday

Silver Spurs Arena

1875 Silver Spur Lane, Kissimmee

We’ll graciously tip our Stetson hats, because when an annual event’s still kickin’ after more than a century, we know it’s something serious. While the main competitive events – bull riding, steer wrestling, barrel racing, the saddle bronc – tend to be high-action (and, at times, life-threatening) feats, anyone who’s ever been to a rodeo knows that’s not what it’s all about. Some might say the revelry outside the arena is the best part: There’s the down-home grub, the ice-cold beer, the dapper rodeo queens in their sparkly boots and fringed denim, and you can’t forget about the dopey rodeo clowns who guarantee hoots with their steers-in-the-rear routines. To kick it up a notch, this year’s Silver Spurs Rodeo hosts the Summer Songwriter Music Series, with live country music concerts starting at 4:30 p.m. before the main show, as part of the Blue Skies & Silver Spurs Festival. We’ll consider it a primer before sauntering into the arena to watch the pro cowboys (and -girls) rope, ride and (hopefully!) grip that hold-on-for-dear-life, eight-second triumph. – Aimee Vitek
