IT'S A TEACHER REBELLION! Following more than a month of effusive Facebook shares by teachers, students and those who care about education, University High School math teacher Josh Katz will announce today that he is running against incumbent Joie Cadle for Orange County Public Schools' school board district 1. Here's the invite!
Why is this important? Katz's speech (below) struck a throbbing nerve last month with the "I'm mad as hell and I can't take it anymore" ed-crowd for its perfectly argued case against school privatization, standardized testing and the "Toxic Culture of Education." "Everyone is a genius," Katz says at the beginning of his TEDx tirade, "but If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live it’s whole life believing it is stupid." Even if you don't have a horse in this race, Katz's take on Michelle Rhee and Bill Gates and the cult of hating teachers to service for-profit industries is worth your 20 minutes. Watch it below, and vote on Aug. 28.
