Intergalactic, planetary: Modrag at Will's Pub (photo by Ashley Belanger)
Instead of the usual eye-tickling swirls of color you’d expect at a psych-leaning show, this recent one (Aug. 14, Will’s Pub) went galactic with video projections blending film and live footage, little planets hanging from the ceiling of the music room, a couple alien action figures flanking the stage and a flying saucer hovering overhead. It was a theme that suited New Smyrna band Radon Moon especially well. Thick, sometimes hot-burning and filled with interesting keyboards, their psychedelic rock transmissions were definitely aimed at the outer realms. They’ve already got sonic size and good atmosphere, but some sharpening would take them to the next level.

But the band that was a clear tier above the rest was touring Austin band Modrag. They’re a more traditional garage psych act but their craft, clarity and power was much more big-league.
