We're not sure how we are only hearing about this now, but today the Orlando Police Department sent out a notice letting us know that on Sept. 19 at 10 p.m., a driver for Uber was arrested for creeping on a woman and touching her in a wildly inappropriate way. Details below.
On September 19, 2014, at approximately 10:00 p.m. the boyfriend of a victim requested an UBER driver to pick up his girlfriend (victim) to meet him at an agreed location. When the driver arrived to pick up the victim, he was driving silver Honda Civic passenger car. While in route to the victim’s destination, the UBER driver road around aimlessly and made comments about how attractive and pretty the victim looked. At some point, the driver stopped the vehicle and placed his hand inside the victim’s blouse. She demanded he stop touching her and that he continue to her destination. The victim did not want to upset the UBER driver so she pretended as though everything was fine. When they arrived at the destination, the victim requested a business card from the UBER driver.
Orlando Police Department was notified of the incident. After police detectives gathered enough evidence, they interviewed the UBER driver who was identified as Ramy Botros. During the interview, Botros described to detectives how the victim was dressed. He said in his country if a woman dresses a certain way, “they are asking for that.”
Botros was placed under arrest and charged with Battery.
According to the arrest affadavit, the country Botros is from is Egypt. And apparently the victim at one point actually told him: "Do not touch my boobs or I will hit you in your face." Not sure how much clearer the victim could have been that she was not, in fact, asking for anything but a ride from an allegedly safe ride-share service.
UPDATE: The Raw Story has also reported on this story, indicating that Orlando police are warning people not to use Uber or other unregulated ride-share services.
