In a fitting kickoff for the special four-part Jazz Roots concert series, Dr. Phillips is tipping a hat to the Genius himself, Ray Charles (who Billy Joel famously touted as being more important than Elvis Presley – say what?!). Celebrating said genius will be an all-star lineup of award-winning performers like 10-time Grammy-winning a cappella group Take 6, DownBeat Vocalist of the Year Nnenna Freelon and mind-melting saxophonist Javon Jackson. Equally as exciting as all these trophy-wavers, there will also be a 50-person Orlando-based choir. We hope that by opening their jazz series with an affordable ticket and a tribute to a famous civil rights champ like Mr. Ray Charles (he refused to play at segregated venues like Bell Auditorium in Augusta, Georgia) is a sign that the new arts center really is of and for the people.
