Screamo band MewithoutYou wrestles with death at the Social

by

It’s clear straight from the album title, Pale Horses, that MewithoutYou songwriter Aaron Weiss is wrestling with death on the latest disc, or at least with its imagery. Without fearing retribution from the band’s still-staunch hardcore-leaning fans (who will immediately hold dear the album’s fiercest standout track, “Red Cow”), he conjures scenes from Revelations with his angsty self-examination in the language of religion. Some critics find the record unchallenging or less exciting than past releases that pivoted from style to style to always feel fresh. But others, who listened maybe a little more closely, found the variety bolstered by unusual song arcs on quietly adventurous tracks that will likely sound the most intriguing live (like “Dorothy” or album closer “Rainbow Signs”).
