The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a 22-year-old jail inmate who fought with a K-9 during arrest.
Max Gracia was pronounced dead Monday after he was moved from the jail’s medical unit to Orlando Regional Medical Center, the Orlando Sentinel
reports. Officials have not explained how Gracia died or his medical condition before his death.
Gracia had been arrested Thursday, August 6, after the Orlando Police Department said he robbed a Circle K store on North John Young Parkway with a gun and took cash from the register. A clerk inside the store later told police that after Gracia asked her for all the money, he repeatedly said, “I'm sorry but I got to do this.”
Police found Gracia after the robbery using a K-9, but Gracia fought the dog. After the encounter, Gracia ran into Lake Mann and swam for two hours before he was arrested. He was charged on four counts, including robbery with a firearm and resisting an officer with violence.
