Perhaps chief among the approximately million reasons I love the little Will’s Pub/Lil Indies complex is that two shows can often be happening at once within steps of each other. Last night, under the shadow of the Grand Collab showcase next door (Feb. 28, Will’s Pub), some serious shit was getting kicked at Lil Indies by Missouri’s Molly Gene One Whoaman Band. In case you couldn’t parse it from her moniker, she’s in the one-man-band business.
Now if rock & roll has historically been a boys club, this niche genre might as well have been presided over by Spanky and the boys:
Locally, we’re lucky to have Renee is a Zombie, but she does more of the loop-and-layer thing. Molly Gene, however, is the true-blue article – guitar, foot drums and all. Most excitingly, she’s in direct lineage with flamethrowing bosses like Bob Log III and Scott H. Biram (for whom she opened here just last month). Sounding like Joan Jett fronting the Immortal Lee County Killers all rolled into one person, she stomps out punked-up outlaw blues revved hard with red-lining, butter-sizzling Delta slide action. The fact that she’s as apt to cover Mississippi Fred McDowell as she is AC/DC gives you a good idea of where she’s coming from.
But more than just attitude, there are real chops here too. That “whoa, man” part’s not an empty boast. The lady’s got heat, sickness and skill, even catching the attention of the guys from excellent Miami punk band the Grey 8s before they took the headlining stage next door themselves. Maybe most importantly for us, she’s got family here, so hopefully that means more Orlando appearances than the average stop.
