Last year Daytona Lagoon, the aging family entertainment center near the Daytona Beach Pier, was purchased by United Parks, and earlier this month the company unveiled new plans for a $2 million upgrade
The focus of the upgrades will be on the water park rides, which have fallen into disrepair over the years. The broken dump bucket in the water fort area will be replaced by two new buckets, and other slides are being repainted and updated as well.
In other parts of the park, upgrades include new kitchen equipment, a new indoor ropes course and a new fingerprint scanning system at the front gate to allow easy re-entry to the park that sits walking distance from the beach.
The upgrades will carry into 2017 with a new interactive slide, where riders play an arcade-style game via touchpads on their tubes. These interactive tubes have been popular each year at IAAPA
. Until now, none have been brought to the Central Florida market.
Another new slide will feature a drop-away floor similar to Ihu’s Breakaway Falls at Aquatica.
The area around Daytona Lagoon has proven to be a difficult market. Long gone are the wild spring breakers, pushed out in part by the city of Daytona Beach itself, which tried to rebrand itself as a family destination. (The results of the rebranding are debatable.) The large entertainment and dining complex Ocean Walk, directly across from Daytona Lagoon, is going back to auction for the second time
in two and a half years. Other nearby attractions have struggled to remain open.
The new improvements at Daytona Lagoon shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. As part of the sale with Ocean Center, from whom the park leases its property, United was required to invest at least $2 million into the park by 2018 or face increased rent.
United will have the new investments completed by the beginning of the summer season in 2017.
