On Tuesday (April 19) at 8:30 am, the local cultural treasure that is the
Timucua Arts White House stands trial is due to appear in
the principal's office City Council Chambers.
Since 2000, eminent music figure
Benoit Glazer has been hosting intimate music and cultural events at his family's south downtown home, which expanded into a beautifully purpose-built facility (the "White House") in 2007. Over 50 events happen there each year, almost all of them free and open to the public. The White House is also the seat of the
Timucua Arts Foundation, a benefactor to great, pacesetting and critical music organizations like the
Accidental Music Festival and the
Civic Minded 5. There are fewer more pure
patrons of the arts in this city than this place and the foundation behind it.
But recently, the City has set its bureaucratic cross hairs on the venue, demanding it apply for a
conditional use permit to continue cultivating beauty in the community. Without it, one of the most organic, altruistic and enlightened cultural lights in Orlando will be
extinguished.
To prevent that injustice, the Timucua folks and the vibrant arts galaxy that surrounds them are calling on people to
show up in force to the above hearing and speak up about the
immeasurable cultural value the White House adds to the city at large almost every single week and largely for free. Do it.
