Cover detail from Blue Songs
Joshua Rogers of Illuminated Paths
recently mentioned that he releases a few tapes every week, and I remember thinking, "Maybe he means a tape every few weeks," promptly filing the information away. And yet, the Illuminated Paths Facebook
just premiered three new releases freshly available on their bandcamp page
and Black Magic Tamarak
, there's this incredible sprawling triple album (available as a cassette or digital download
) by Clément Rhétorie, Blue Songs/Una Vita Difficile/Fake Music for a Real Film,
and it is stunning. The music is a smoldering, fragile collection of late-night regret instrumental sketches. Switching from electronics to guitar-based meditations, this triple album takes influences from Eno's Discreet Music
, the post-rock of Tortoise, ambient, torchy bossa-jazz and maybe everything in between. Worth it.
And oh, by the way, at the exact same time I discovered Blue Songs,
I find out that Justin Timberlake just premiered the brand-new tune "Can't Stop the Feeling
!" Heady times.
