Orlando shooter Omar Mateen may have supported terrorist groups like ISIS, but top intelligence officials are now saying the Orlando shooter had no direct connection to any terrorist organization.

According to Reuters, CIA Director John Brennan told a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing Thursday, June 16, that the agency "has not been able to uncover any direct link" between Mateen and terrorist groups.

Mateen, who shot and killed 49 people and injured 53 at Orlando gay night Pulse last Sunday, claimed allegiance to multiple terrorists groups besides ISIS, many of which are at odds with each other

According to ABC, Mateen posted a comment to his Facebook in support of the Islamic State, and also called local television station News13 during the rampage to claim allegiance to ISIS, who've since claimed responsibility for the attack.

Before purchasing the weapons used in the attack, Mateen passed all background checks and even passed a psychological exam to earn his firearms license.
