The FBI and Department of Justice have now released the full, unredacted transcript from the 911 call involving the Orlando nightclub shooter responsible for killing 49 last Sunday, June 12.
This morning, the FBI and the DOJ released a partial transcript
, which attracted quite a bit of criticism from Republicans, specifically House Speaker Paul Ryan, who called their decision "preposterous
However, the DOJ and FBI claim their reasoning was to respect the victims and their families and not give any unnecessary publicity to terror groups or the killer.
The agencies also stated that the uproar over the redacted version of the transcript has caused an an "unnecessary distraction."
The earlier redacted transcripts of the 911 call named neither the shooter nor the terrorist group to which he pledged allegiance.
“The purpose of releasing the partial transcript of the shooter's interaction with 911 operators was to provide transparency, while remaining sensitive to the interests of the surviving victims, their families, and the integrity of the ongoing investigation," said the agencies in a joint email statement.
"We also did not want to provide the killer or terrorist organizations with a publicity platform for hateful propaganda. Unfortunately, the unreleased portions of the transcript that named the terrorist organizations and leaders have caused an unnecessary distraction from the hard work that the FBI and our law enforcement partners have been doing to investigate this heinous crime. As much of this information had been previously reported, we have re-issued the complete transcript to include these references in order to provide the highest level of transparency possible under the circumstances.”
