Rockabilly "retro rad" chef Emily Ellyn
will visit Bok Tower Gardens
in Lake Wales for two days of gorgeous flowers and kick-ass cooking this weekend.
Tomorrow, March 25
, Ellyn will be doing a canning demo to show all the cool things you can preserve in Mason jars
(it's not just pickled beets, people). On deck: green-tomato chutney and chocolate-covered strawberry jam. The demo for the jam is at 11:30 a.m. and the chutney is at 1:30 p.m. Samples and recipe cards are included.
On Sunday, March 26
, bring the kiddos ($25 each) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. when Ellyn will give a tour of the Bok Tower Gardens fruit and vegetable garden
and an overview of growing tomatoes. She'll also give a lunchtime cooking demo and the kids will enjoy lunch whipped up from the garden's tomatoes (tomato soup) with grilled cheese. Ellyn will read a copy of her book, "Tomato Wisdom" while the kids eat.
Ellyn is an Orlando native and was a finalist on season 8 of The Next Food Network Star. Girl's got chops and smarts, too. She received her culinary arts degree from the Culinary Institute of America and the Acadamie Internationale de Management in Paris, France. She's currently pursuing her Ph.D. in hospitality management. Go girl.
