Still from 'Surface Image: Prologue: Oranges 2015'
In this year’s selection of Florida-based artists competing for OMA’s annual Florida Prize in Contemporary Art, the divisions of the current art scene rise more starkly than ever before. Earlier iterations of the show gathered a more homogenous group, whereas 2017’s exhibition careens from Old Master-style representational oil painting to multi-channel video. It should make for a lively exhibition, as well as a lively opening party – everybody loves the “but is it really art” debate, right? OK, even if you don’t enjoy a good art fight, you can meet the artists, see the show, snack on the work of 10 caterers (including Bulla, Reyes Mezcaleria, Soco and more, each of whom will interpret one of the artists in edible form); sip beer, wine or cocktails; and chill to DJ Stereo77. Sounds like a party to engage all the senses.
