Orange County Public Schools
will remain closed on Wednesday and Thursday this week as families who fled Hurricane Irma make their way back home.
The district says it will close on Sept. 13 and Sept. 14 because officials know many students and their families are still without power, recovering from damage or returning from evacuation. Currently, 66 local schools remain without electricity, though efforts to remedy that are ongoing.
Public school officials in Orange County had already closed facilities last Friday before Irma arrived and then later on Monday and Tuesday of this week. Florida Gov. Rick Scott ordered all public K-12 schools, colleges, universities and state offices to close Friday through Monday in anticipation of Irma.
