It’s strange listening to Katy Perry after hearing “Roar” so much last year. As one of the official songs of the Hillary Clinton campaign, it served as an anthem for traditionally marginalized groups forced into silence to roar their truths to the world. One Donald Trump presidency and a #metoo movement later, the Grammy award-winning pop singer’s battle cry rings bittersweet. If you anticipated more rabble-rousing chants in the era of the protest, you’ll stay waiting – aside from her “Chained to the Rhythm” hit with Skip Marley, the larger-than-life performer keeps it subtle on her latest album, Witness. Still, Perry knows how to have a good time, so expect dazzling visuals and a community belt-out of “I Kissed a Girl” before the night is over.
