Last year, when Feld pulled the plug
on the Ringling Brothers circus after more than 146 years, the Tampa Bay-based production company known for its Disney on Ice and Monster Jam productions promised big things in the future.
Now we have one of the first major productions announced since then. A new arena show, Jurassic World Live
, based on the blockbuster film franchise Jurassic World
, will launch next year.
Using projection mapping, animatronics, life-size puppets and live actors, the new show will feature dinosaurs from the films while transporting guests to Isla Nublar. The “herd” of dinosaurs will include some that stretch more than 40 feet in length.
"The live Jurassic World arena experience will create new ways for fans to engage with one of the world's most popular franchises," says Kenneth Feld, chairman and
CEO of Feld Entertainment. "Feld Entertainment has the expertise and experience to bring this iconic franchise to life through an innovative format in an immersive arena setting coupled with a unique narrative that includes iconic locations and fan
favorite dinosaurs – creating edge-of-your-seat, live entertainment that is a mix between a stunt show and a 3-D thrill attraction."
Feld has had success with projection mapping in other shows, including the hugely popular Marvel Universe Live!
arena shows (which stopped by Orlando a few weeks ago). Using projection mapping and sparse props, Marvel Universe Live transports guests everywhere from Spiderman’s New York to the Black Panther’s hidden high-tech nation of Wakanda to Thor’s Asgard in a matter of seconds.
This isn’t the first time Feld has used dinosaurs in its arena shows. Both dragons and dinosaur puppets have been used in Ringling Brothers shows. In those, Feld either used costuming on live elephants or performer-operated life-size puppets. Since all the Feld-owned elephants have now been retired to a facility here in Florida
, the latter is likely how the dinosaurs will be realized this time.
Jurassic World will have some competition. Walking With Dinosaurs – The Arena Spectacular
has been touring worldwide for the last 11 years. More than 9 million people have seen it in over 250 cities. It is currently touring Europe, with an Asia tour in the works.
Unlike Walking With Dinosaurs, the Feld show will likely be more focused on the entertainment than the educational aspect of dinosaurs, though some educational components will likely be included. The "edutainment" approach isn’t anything new for Feld. For many years, the company used the animals in Ringling shows to discuss conservation efforts of wild animals. The company also developed a Sesame Street Live!
arena show which has a strong "edutainment" focus.
As the Jurassic World arena show is family-friendly, it’s highly unlikely we’ll see any of the graphic
, often gruesome deaths
that made the original Jurassic Park
and the newer Jurassic World
film franchises so terrifying.
The arena tour is scheduled to launch in late 2019.
