Welcome to Orlando Weekly
's "Band of the Week
." Every week, we highlight one of our favorite local bands. This week, we're pleased to bring you Mag.Lo
Mag.Lo is playing Will's Pub on Feb. 20 with Milo, Elucid and JPEGMafia.
Just the facts:
When did the band form?
Mag.Lo formed some time around 2012. I chose it as my name when my friends and I started our collective Ducksauce Illuminati (20 year olds found the Illuminati a particularly funny concept at the time.) Shoutouts to O_Super, Arsenio Delfino, and Alphonso SWOOPS the God. I actually wouldn’t be anywhere if O_Super didn’t hit me up at Community Effort Orlando.
Who's in the band?
I do everything. Lyrics, Compositions, Production, Vocal and Instrumental performance, managing the social media pages horribly etc.
Currently available releases:
“Nope” 1st EP
“Never.” 2nd EP
Describe your sound in five words:
Space-Hop with Earth sounds.
What has been your most memorable show so far?
It’s a toss up between Rollins Fox Fest or Daytona Beach Indie Fest. Something about a festival stage is unlike any other. It’s grandiose but I always try to keep it intimate and it felt perfectly balanced at Fox Fest. Especially cause the sun was setting and it was just cool enough, then the wind started blowing. There came this special moment during my performance of Waiting Room where the leaf pedals started flying by on some anime ish. Singing over a big field where people were relaxing on blankets or singing along. It was nice. Real wholesome rap shit.
Which local band is your favorite one to play a show with?
It WAS Odessos until they had to go and blast off into the cosmos. I feel like growing up I saw amazing nontoxic energy from live shows. I used to watch a lot of Japanese Rock shows and it’s wild. I try to think of that energy and feeling every show I perform. Odessos matched it perfectly. Together it was fun to show a new generation of showgoers that.
What description gets used for your band that you would most
like to correct people on? Why?
Nerdcore or backpack rap.
Nerdcore as a genre doesn’t make sense to me because you think it’d be like Leftover Crack in Rivers Cumo cosplay but instead you mostly get your DM telling you about sucker MCs. :\ There are some bright exceptions of course. While my inspiration from video games and anime is definitely prevalent in the synth sounds I tend to create or choose, I’m not out here dropping Zelda or hentai bars every 5 seconds.
Backpack rap is meh. Don’t get me wrong I love backpacks but how do you expect black lower middle class kids to rap?
What’s your favorite thing about being a Central Florida artist? What's your least favorite? Why?
I love the community in Daytona. They have that raw reciprocated energy I long for. People sleep on Daytona but it’s growing I promise you. Daytona and Winter Park is my favorite thing about Central Florida. Orlando is probably my least favorite cause people don’t dance or let loose at shows but it’s aight. Honestly I’m probably just not at the right places but I’m from Deltona so I’m always on the outskirts lol.
Any big news to share?
I have another short album/EP coming out this first quarter that I’m excited about! It was gonna be an album chronicling the ups and downs but honestly it got too whiny and I like to get points across with fewer but more dense songs. Not just making a 10-12 song album cause that’s what people do. I like a smooth ride.
I’m also working on the soundtrack for a video game called Pairanormal
that I’m very excited about! It’s still in development, so follow me for more updates!
