THIS LITTLE UNDERGROUND
Little Dragon, The Beacham, Mar. 14

Since their broader 2007 debut, critically lauded Swedish group Little Dragon have climbed their way up to being a pretty hot-shit commodity, hurtling like a rocket in the 2010s. You don’t get tapped for contributions by a list of unfuckwithable names like Gorillaz, Big Boi, DJ Shadow and TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek for nothing. They’ve even earned major establishment propers like a 2015 Grammy nom while still maintaining indie cred.

Certification by the cognoscenti is no wonder. Recognition of their left-field sound by the mainstream, however, was somewhat unexpected. But whatever, good for them, and good for the wider swath of the world who’ve discovered Little Dragon due to it. They bring an evergreen perspective to music that threads one slick needle between flair and progress. It’s a sleek synthesis of dance, pop and R&B that’s rendered with style, taste and playful daring.

On stage, they now have a big look and sound that’s finally equal to their live energy, with a robust mix of electronics and live play. Naturally, their supple, liquid groove was nonstop throughout the performance. But the intriguing details and instinct that so distinctively punctuate their music were also intact, sometimes even more pronounced, in the live execution. And, of course, all their essence is concentrated and embodied in true frontwoman Yukimi Nagano. The sum was a bright, kinetic spectacle of pattern and movement that impels bodies and pulses like it could go all night.

It’s validating to see an act like this go from playing a small club (Backbooth) at the beginning of the decade to now filling a big hall with the production value and the following that befits them. Sometimes the world is just.
