The transformation of Disney's Hollywood Studios hinges greatly upon Star Wars and the upcoming "Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway" dark ride, but now there are a few confirmed significant shifts in that plan.

After weeks of speculation, Disney confirmed late last week that the new flagship Mickey Mouse dark ride has been delayed. The confirmation was found tucked into the bottom of a Disney Parks Blog post announcing that the high-tech projection mapping based ride will be replicated in Disneyland come 2022.

This delay from Fall 2019 to Spring 2020 comes just weeks after Disney announced that the "Rise of the Resistance" ride in Stars Wars: Galaxy's Edge will be opening at a later date, after the Star Wars land itself opens in June and August in Disneyland and Hollywood Studios respectively. Both of the now-delayed rides feature groundbreaking technology, including unique use of hyperreal screens and a trackless vehicle system.

Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway will be the most extensive use of the projection mapping technology that Disney has so expertly refined over the past decade. Harnessing this technology, the new Mickey Mouse ride will take guests into the middle of a cartoon.

The Mickey Mouse ride will replace the now-closed Great Movie Ride at Hollywood Studios but, in no surprise to anyone familiar with the modern Disney company, the ride will be cut-and-paste into Disneyland, similar to how Disney is duplicating the Star Wars land at both resorts.

Rumors point to Mickey's Railway also heading to the Walt Disney Studios park in Paris and at least one of the Asian-based Disney parks, most likely Hong Kong Disneyland.

No specific opening date has been given for either Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway or either of Star Wars' Rise of the Resistance rides. The Star Wars rides and Hollywood Studios' Mickey's Railway should open within the next year. More details regarding the ride and its future locations are expected to be announced at this year's D23 Expo in August.
