There’s no question that with theme parks, hotels, and a large swath of the foodservice industry shut down or restricted during the COVID-19 crisis, the normally thriving Orlando economy has taken a punch. While opening the parks and convention center may still be several months away, many small businesses are either looking forward to an earlier re-opening or they’ve never stopped working. Here are a few of the ways that we’ve seen non-essential businesses around Orlando adapt to the Florida governor’s stay at home order:

  • Teleconferencing – It’s astounding how many in-person meetings don’t actually need to be conducted in person, but if you do require a personal touch, Zoom, Skype, and Facetime have been in use by many businesses for years. If you’re a lawyer, there’s good news: the Supreme Court of Florida issued an emergency order allowing the swearing-in of witnesses via a video link.
  • Curbside Pickup – Both restaurants and retail operations have been able to practice social distancing by having cars pull up and placing purchased orders in their customer’s trunks, avoiding any face-to-face interaction.

  • Online Orders – For companies that sell goods, they can still deliver their products to their customers via delivery services (if their client base is local) or by shipping through the mail. Many brick-and-mortar businesses are rushing to build Shopify stores to supply the increased online demand for products.

Growing Your Customer-Base During the Slowdown

Not every company can just make a couple of modifications and be back in the black, however. For some, being labeled as a non-essential business means that they can’t work at all until the economy returns to somewhat of a state of normalcy.
