789 Deli rolls out another round

The cult of roll-up sandwiches has rolled into downtown with the opening of 789 Deli (501 N. Magnolia Ave., 407-650-1789). Unlike its numerical compatriots 1-6-8 and 459, the closest 789 comes to Chinese is their homemade black beans and rice.

The menu is loaded with rolled, subbed or marble-breaded treats such as Italian (ham, salami, provolone), pressed chicken or tuna melts, and the lactose-loaded "5 Cheese," with cheddar, Swiss, provolone, feta and herb cream cheese. Five bucks gets a roll-your-own of any meat, cheese, veggie and topping combination.

Open from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., breakfast roll-ups and bagel sandwiches start the day, with salads and more sandwiches for lunch. They're quite proud of the "Buffalo chicken" roll-up (spicy chicken, "cheddalone," lettuce and tomato loaded into a tortilla), promising, "It tastes like burning!" Which until now was a bad thing.
