It’s tough to shine in Hunx’s flamboyant, eclipsing shadow, but top hag Shannon Shaw has been as definitive a force as any in the Punx. Under her own captaincy with the Clams, she continues to ply the oldies like an orphaned ’60s girl-group singer who took up with a garage-punk band. In fact, this latest is a particularly impressive vocal outing for Shaw (and co-singer Cody Blanchard as well). With great sock-hoppers like “Rip Van Winkle,” “Ozma” and especially top pick “Hey Willy,” it’s probably their strongest set of songs yet. And though the Clams are way better as a live experience, Rat House is a decent punk joy ride in the T-Bird.
