AT&T hangs up


They alerted the media. They hired a lawyer. They formed an association.

And last week, the strategy worked. Audubon Park neighbors won their battle against AT&T Wireless Communications over building an 80-foot-tall cell phone "monopole" at the local elementary school `Electro-magnet school, June 1`.

The June 29 announcement shocked many neighbors. "I thought we would prevail," says Jennifer Marvel, who spearheaded opposition. "But I thought we'd have to drag it out."

AT&T had proposed to lease the site at Audubon Park Elementary School from Orange County Schools for $15,000 annually. An AT&T spokeswoman said the company withdrew its application because it didn't want to be perceived as inhospitable to Audubon Park's wishes.
