Beach Day – Trip Trap Attack

★★★★

This awaited debut LP by the meteoric South Florida trio validates the early hype and demonstrates why they’re among the best of the girl-group revivalists. Besides the slight garage grit, they’re incredibly literal. But thanks primarily to the big voice of little Kimmy Drake, they’re also more precise and incandescent. Highlights are the fantastic retro-jangle of “Boys,” the bikini twist of “Beach Day,” the sock-hopping “Come Back to Me,” the strangely ’80s-tinged “Am I the Only One” and especially the full Spector majesty of “Walking on the Streets.” The sensibility’s simple, but their strength is in keeping things fun and just plain good.
