We were thrilled to learn in March that Daughters & Co. bitters maven Kaitlin McGavock would take over Lil Indies, rebranding the already charming beer bar as a haven of craft cocktails, complete with an English garden-themed patio, a custom-poured cement bar and a rooftop herb garden. And while they’ve missed the July deadline they originally announced, big things have been happening incrementally: We’re loving the monthly Barrel to Bottle Whiskey Club, and one of McGavock’s summer drinks, the Old Man and the Sea, was included in the “101 best new cocktails” by SF bar columnist Gaz Regan. But, busy as McGavock is, it’s the ensuing drought of Daughters & Co. bitters that’s wearing on us. (Those “holiday bitters” pretty much owned our winter 2013 drink-mixing.) McGavock says she’s just waiting on new, waterproof labels and that D&Co. bitters are available by special order, so – grudgingly, if not bitterly – we’ll take what we can get for now.
