Cardboard Art Festival

When: Fri., July 24, 7-11 p.m., Sat., July 25, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sun., July 26, 12-5 p.m. 2015

Over the past three years, the Daily City’s Cardboard Art Festival has grown from an interesting party to one of our favorite art events. Local artists take the packing material of thousands of Amazon Prime deliveries (or whatever) and use it to create sculptures, paintings, moving installations, props, costumes and a host of other things. The end result is far from your idea of the usual stuffy gallery opening and more like a colorful, interactive wonderland that invites you to walk around, gawk and play. The event moves out of the Mills 50 neighborhood this year to an empty storefront in the SoDo shopping center, but brings an opening night DJ party, kids events where your children can learn how to make things out of the boxes their toys come in, and a sketch comedy show from members of SAK Comedy Lab. Plus, if you feel inspired, the SuperTarget’s right there: You can dumpster-dive to grab some raw materials. – Thaddeus McCollum
