Tastemaking upstart Lolipop Records has been radiating some of the hottest waves from the L.A. rock underground lately, and Cobalt Cranes is one of the boutique label’s most promising and complete bands. Besides releasing notable acts who’ve been igniting Orlando stages like Broncho, Ex-Cult, Thee Oh Sees, Froth, Peach Kelli Pop and Corners, Lolipop deserves our love because they’ve also been a launch pad for some legit homegrown Florida talent like St. Augustine’s Queen Beef, formerly local Strangers Family Band and, most notably, local pop-punk comets Wet Nurse. But buzzing label aside, L.A.’s Cobalt Cranes is a band to watch anyway. Merging a rumbling, serious Brit pulse with a golden California haze, their heavy-sweet rock is sharp, textured and melodically penetrating. This show should prove to be an exciting early glimpse at an act with all the right stuff to be a near-future name.
