Nick Flynn’s Another Bullshit Night in Suck City was that rare thing: a memoir built around events that actually merited recounting, wrought in language equally as remarkable – not to mention one of the best titles of the decade. In the annals of Truly Fucked Things, encountering the alcoholic con-man father you barely know while checking him into a homeless shelter is certainly a contender, and Flynn’s book, thanks to its unsparing and poetic portrait of his messed-up youth, gained him not just critical acclaim but also rabid fans. Any of those fans living in Central Florida will have a few chances to hear from Flynn this month – he’s a master artist at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in October, and as always, the artists offer free outreach events for those of us not lucky enough to be part of the residency. Flynn has booked two, in addition to ACA’s traditional end-of-residency InsideOUT performance.
Nick Flynn reads 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, at University of Central Florida, 4000 Central Florida Blvd., Biology Building (BL209), 407-823-5329; and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, at Stetson University’s Rinker Auditorium, 345 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand, 386-822-7720. Both readings are free.InsideOUT, the closing reception for ACA residency #143, starts at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, at Atlantic Center for the Arts, 1414 Art Center Ave., New Smyrna Beach, 386-427-6975; admission is $10.
