Dani Shapiro

When: Tue., Feb. 24, 7:30-8:30 p.m. 2015

Dani Shapiro’s novels have found wide acclaim in the relatively narrow world of so-called literary fiction – but it’s her painstakingly observed, lyrical memoirs that truly connect with her devotees. Shapiro is one of three master artists in residence this month at the Atlantic Center for the Arts, where she’ll work with a group of young writers for three weeks. Aspiring writers and assorted literati not lucky enough to be part of her ACA coterie have the chance to hear Shapiro read, however, and take part in a question-and-answer period and book signing. We’re pretty sure we’d like to hear life advice from the woman who said (in 2013’s Still Writing: The Perils and Pleasures of a Creative Life), “When writers who are just starting out ask me when it gets easier, my answer is never. It never gets easier. ... If anything, it gets harder.” Truer words may never have been written. – JBY
