By this time every summer, you’re operating at 50 percent. Your body knows this hot, hot heat is inhuman, and it knows that the best way for you to survive the next 10 weeks is to only do as much as you have to. So you walk around in a hazy dream-state, drifting from home to work to dive bar to beach. There’s got to be someplace darker, cooler, more refreshing. Welcome to our very own endless summer.
In the film The Endless Summer (upon which we’ve very loosely based this issue), narrator Bruce Brown figures that anyone with enough time and money could follow summer around the globe. His movie was a documentary about surfers who did just that, searching for the perfect wave. Likewise, we figured that most of us spend the entire summer (and much of our money) restlessly searching Orlando for the perfect way to beat the heat. In this issue, we’ve done some of the legwork for you so you don’t have to expend quite so much precious energy finding the ideal respite.
Wwe play a merciless “Game of Cones” with some of the area’s favorite ice cream hotspots. We tell you when the best movies will hit local screens so you can schedule your air-conditioned matinee time. Get a look at some of summer’s most well-worn (and worn-in) T-shirt fashion statements. Read about our top five favorite beaches. We’ll school you on which beers are best served icy cold this summer. Then we’ll show you how to be a summer-cocktail genius. Finally, we start our summer calendar, in which we list summer concerts, spectator sports, food truck events, pub crawls and Fourth of July spectaculars.
We hope you find your perfect way to get through summer in this issue. If not, visit orlandoweekly.com for galleries of beach photos and summer T-shirts, as well as a list of our favorite summer movies of all time. Don’t worry – nothing lasts forever. Not even our seemingly endless summer.
