FALL GUIDE 2008 - SPORTS AND RECREATION

Fall is the time when Orlandoans' thoughts turn to getting outside without basting in their own sweat or being drowned in an afternoon deluge. In other words, it's an excellent time to park the car and ride a bike.

But if you've pedaled around O-Town, you know that we do not boast a "true" bicycle network, at least as based on the standards of Mr. Enrique Penalosa. It simply isn't very easy to get around Orlando on two wheels.

Example: the city's map of its own bike routes. It's easy enough to find the map online — www.cityoforlando.net/transportation — but the overall map is almost useless because the file is huge. There are handy, printer-friendly versions of certain trails available online, if you're going where they lead. (Metroplan Orlando, a regional planning organization, has a site with Google Earth bike maps, bike crash studies, trail status reports and a form to report hazards on bike paths at www.metroplanorlando.com.)

Though Orlando plans to spend some $11.7 million on its bike system through 2010 and the city earned a "bronze" in bike-friendliness from the League of American Bicyclists, it still feels as if bicycles are an afterthought. How else can one explain the proliferation of brick streets? The lack of bike lanes separated from car lanes by physical barriers? The schizophrenic system of bike routes that often simply end? The almost universal disrespect accorded to bicyclists by motorists? (It's the rare driver who doesn't dip their wheels into the concrete bike lane along Livingston Street in search of a smoother ride over the lumpy brick streets.)

It's too bad, really, because Orlando could be an excellent biking town. It's flat, the weather's usually nice and there are lots of places where you can live within biking distance to work and play. But becoming the Portland of the South will take time, so here are a few resources to get you started:

Orlando Critical Mass Critical Mass is the national cycling advocacy group that gets its point across by gathering large numbers of bicyclists and hitting the road, often to the dismay of motorists. Orlando's group meets monthly at the entrance to Loch Haven Park. (www.orlandocriticalmass.org)

Florida Freewheelers More than 600 members and regularly scheduled rides for all ages and skill levels, from recreational riders to racers. (www.floridafreewheelers.com)

The Florida Bicycle Association A nonprofit and a great resource. Works to create places to ride and to educate riders and drivers on bike safety, rules of the road, what to do after a bike crash, etc. (www.floridabicycle.org)

Commute Orlando A blog for those who use their bikes to get around the City Beautiful. Has info on picking a bike, routes and riding tips. (www.commuteorlando.com)

407 Fixed Gear Another good local blog for cycling flotsam. This one's also cool for the vids that get posted of local rides. Check out the clandestine Fashion Square Mall ride. Sweet. (www.407fixedgear.com)
