Head west for Eastern Europe

by

A taste of Eastern Europe recently cropped up at West Colonial Drive and Kirkman Road at a place called Warszawa. This family-run eatery is part takeout counter and part sit-down cafe. A small market stocks imported condiments and sandwich toppings.

Frequented by Czech, German, Hungarian and Polish expatriates, Warszawa offers some of the most substantial sandwiches you'll find anywhere in town, made with deep-brown breads and heavy, imported sausages. Owner Mira Pyzel also dishes up hot lunches to go. Watch for the "golabki" -- stuffed cabbage rolls packed with meat and rice. Dough-wrapped specialties are another hot item, particularly sweet, creamy pierogi dumplings, flavored with cheese. Lunch with all the trimmings typically costs less than $5. Warszawa is open 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
