Jaleo opens in Disney Springs, Humbl heads to Windermere and more in Orlando foodie news



OPENINGS: Celebrity plant-based chef and James Beard Award nominee Matthew Kenney will open Humbl – a fast-casual vegan joint serving 100 percent plant-based burgers, pizzas, bowls, salads, ice creams and sweets in the new Windermere Village plaza this June. Kenney, along with majority partners Paul Mascia and Eric Koeser, will also open Humbl inside the food hall at the Yard at Ivanhoe slated to open early next year ... Jaleo, the Spanish tapas restaurant by chef, humanitarian and 2019 Nobel Peace Prize nominee José Andrés, has opened at Disney Springs. Also open is Pepe by José Andrés, the quick-service version of his popular D.C. food truck serving bocatas (Spanish sandwiches), gazpacho and salads to go ... Look for Le Ky Patisserie to serve French pastries with an Asian twist starting this weekend (March 23) inside the Hourglass Social House in the Hourglass District ... Lucky's Market will open its seventh Orlando-area store in the old Sports Authority space across from Fashion Square Mall in the Colonial Landing Plaza this May ... Sideward Brewing in the Milk District celebrates its grand opening March 30.

EVENTS: Chefs Kathleen Blake (The Rusty Spoon) and Jamie McFadden (Cuisiniers) will present a three-course, locally sourced menu at the Swamp Sistas La La Charity Brunch Sunday, March 24, at 10 a.m. at the Blue Bamboo Center for the Arts in Winter Park. The event benefits the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida and will feature a live performance by the Swamp Sistas Ensemble. Other local offerings include fish dip from Lombardi's Seafood, Pop Fusion Gourmet Fruit Pops, bottled sauces from Poca's Hottest and Fat Cat and assorted breads from Olde Hearth Bakery. Cask & Larder will provide the beer and Quantum Leap Winery the mango-cider mimosas. Cost is $75 ... Cress Restaurant hosts Africa, a Feast for the Senses, a multi-course dinner inspired by the flavors and culinary styles of various regions in Africa on Friday, April 5. Some of the dishes to expect: Moroccan b'stilla, West African maafe, Mozambican peri-peri prawns, and Ethiopian buttermilk and teff injera, to name a few. Seatings take place between 5:30 and 9 p.m. Cost is $60, or $84 with wine pairings ... Ruth's Chris stages its TasteMaker Dinner Series 7 p.m. Thursday, April 4, at the Lake Mary and Dr. Phillips locations, and 7 p.m. Friday, April 5, in Winter Park. The four-course meal will feature pairings by Belle Glos Wines. Cost is $105.
