“It had begun to snow again. He watched sleepily the flakes, silver and dark, falling obliquely against the lamp- light.” James Joyce’s short story “The Dead,” the concluding story in his seminal collection Dubliners, is generally agreed to be one of the most perfect examples of the form ever published – and with its snowy atmosphere and Christmas-party setting, it’s also an ideal holiday read. Luckily for us snow-deprived Floridians, this week Mad Cow opens their produc- tion of the show, adapted for the stage in the 1990s: Meghan Moroney and Nicholas Wuehrmann lead the Mad Cow herd in a musical version of a winter’s tale that is by turns merry and dark, opaque and epiphanic.
