Jazz duo colors outside the lines

To be expected of the Civic Minded Five's off-center productions, the weekend performance by jazz composers and improvisers Tim Berne (alto and baritone saxophonist) and Michael Formanek (acoustic bassist) is colorful stuff.

Formanek's pairing with his longtime friend and bandmate opens the door for improvisation and experimentation -- something he doesn't get a chance to do in his usual work, backing the straightest of jazz players. Berne gave up the major-label life to jump-start his new baby: the guerrilla record label Screwgun. As a former Columbia and JMT/ Polygram recording artist, Berne achieved financial and critical success. Now, the 40-something Brooklynite is calling his own shots. Village Voice described the players as "well acquainted with each other" and "more important, fast listeners." The concert is also hosted by Rollins College's WPRK-FM (91.5).
