Bill McCollum, the House hard-ass on drugs and immigration, has a heart after all. He has introduced a bill that would allow the 32-year-old son of a local couple to return to Florida, even though he's been deported to Canada after serving time for drug-related charges. "The foundation for those private bills is something exceptional, unusual, extraordinary and an injustice, if not corrected," McCollum told the St. Petersburg Times. "This case clearly falls within the parameters of that."
McCollum adds that the fact that the man in question is the son of a political supporter and Orange County Republican Party treasurer is immaterial. Immigration advocates say they hope this experience will help McCollum understand that the policies he espouses and the laws he sponsors have unintended consequences, and that he will change.
