We took to Facebook last week to ask you to tell us what your SunRail experience has been and what you think could be done to improve the service.
Overall, people like the train and seem to be happy with it; however, lack of evening and weekend service seems to be the biggest complaint people have about SunRail so far.
Read on to hear what readers told us they think could be done to make SunRail even better.

I work downtown, but I live in Volusia County, and SunRail stops running about an hour before my shift is over. I’m sure the two hospitals on the route have other employees in my situation. I’d love to be able to cut $300 a month out of my gas bill.

Weekends. It needs to stop being called a commuter rail. We operate a small business in Winter Park, and since the SunRail has opened, we have seen such an influx of new customers. Weekends would really help out the small-business community.

If there was a way to get from the Maitland station to the RDV, like a shuttle, I’d ride it. I’m not walking or getting off in Winter Park to take a bus. No thanks. They need shuttles to get from the stations to work or entertainment areas.

East-West expansion would be fantastic – especially to help ease traffic on Colonial. Connections to universities and tourism hubs would probably improve the safety of our roads for pedestrians and drivers alike. If a long-term solution connected the Orlando International Airport, theme parks, Tampa and Cape Canaveral, we’d have a substantially stronger tourist-friendly city, which would also benefit residents and commuters near and far.

The train needs to run every hour on non-rush hour times. Plus have a late train.

They should have made more standing room and had one long bench like a subway train. These trips aren’t long enough for most people to need that many seats.

It’s great and necessary, but it needs to operate more often during the afternoon, and of course on nights and weekends. The lunch schedule is basically nonexistent unless you’d like to wait an extra hour for the next train. If we want to be a big city, we must operate like one.

I use it occasionally and love it. Wish I could use it more often, but the two-hour break between the last two trains is no good. I work at the hospital, and I think by not having another train 30 minutes after the 7:22 train, they are missing out on a lot of potential commuters at the hospitals that work 12-hour shifts. I’d also love to use it on the weekends on my free time.

Aside from more midday runs, weekend hours and an Orlando International Airport connection, I think they need to devise a way to apply the discounted child/senior fares to the prepaid Suncard. Currently, the only way to receive the discount is to prepay for a whole week/month/year. If you use rail sporadically (we use it one to two times per week to visit Florida Hospital or the Orlando Science Center), purchasing a monthly pass isn’t really a cost savings.

I was invited to be on the inaugural ride as Commissioner Patty Sheehan’s guest. The train was beautiful, fast and a smooth ride. … It was an amazing experience because the next generation that grows up in Metro Orlando is always going to have known mass transit, something the rest of us longed for for an eternity. Sign the petition to extend the hours of operation!
