Rotation: What local artists are listening to

This week: K.G. Omulo

  • Angelo Malicsi

“I think one thing artists or musicians struggle with most is making a simple feel-good record with meaning. Asa’s album title, Beautiful Imperfection, says it all. What comes to mind is a sober Amy Winehouse with a sprinkle of Corrine Bailey Rae’s sultry approach. It gets even better in ‘‪Bimpé’ as she sings in her Yoruba dialect with an unexpected rock twist. The track ‘Why Can’t We’ makes me look forward to tomorrow. However, ‘Preacher Man’ is definitely one of my favorites of the whole record.”

Local Caribbean singer K.G. Omulo plays 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10 at Will’s Pub with Eugene Snowden and Liberation 44. Admission is $8. Omulo’s acclaimed solo debut, Ayah Ye! Moving Train, is available on iTunes.
