Science ain't math

comment

When Orlando Science Center director Sondra Quinn quit two weeks ago, it was to pursue unnamed "other challenges." Perhaps she'll learn to balance a checkbook.

Finally confronting overblown expectations, center officials are seeking a bailout of more than $1.6 million brought about as attendance dropped like a rock after the shine wore off their two-year-old, $40-plus million facility. The appeal follows last year's layoffs of at least 18 people, some of whom the center said had been hired to handle the short-lived rush of visitors to the new building. Orlando will be hit up for $400,000; Orange County is being asked to donate $300,000. The rest will be put up by charitable foundations.
