The evidence suggests that we're on to something here. Last year's Orlando Weekly Photo Contest -- our first -- drew 78 entries. This time the number jumped dramatically -- 170 images, submitted by 55 photographers from Kissimmee to St. Augustine. That left our three esteemed judges (page 28) with plenty to sift. But just as impressive, those numbers helped create a prize pool of $800, with a first place award of $200 for the winning photos in both color and black-and-white. The judges' picks are published on the following pages. To see the rest, catch them on exhibit at Harold & Maude's Espresso Bar, 25 Wall Street Plaza, through Aug. 2. Our thanks to S&S Custom Photolab, which sponsored the event and collected the entries. But the real thanks go to the tal-ented photographers who entered. It's your work that makes us look good -- for the second year in a row. The judges: Frank Holt, public art coordinator for the City of Orlando; Rick Lang, director of photography and instructor at Crealde School of Art in Winter Park (for information on class schedules, call 671-1886); and Gary Monroe, professor of art at Daytona Beach Community College's Southeast Museum School of Photography (for information about the photography program, call 904-255-8131 ext. 3475).
