Primal Scream – More Light
★★★★ (out of 5 stars)
As one of the most shape-shifting, non-linear bands in modernity, fans of Primal Scream are, by now, trained to withhold prediction, buckle in and just take the ride. It’s a pure and liberating relationship, so long as there’s payoff. Their first LP in five years, More Light is one of their more oblique and kaleidoscopic albums. The stylistic cross-stitch here is dense, heady and sometimes even whimsically fun. And despite its frazzling sprawl, the record hits enough marks to anchor the hurricane nicely. But, as usual, they’re best when sporting some snarl and swagger (“2013,” “Culturecide,” “Hit Void,” “Elimination Blues,” “Relativity”).
