The poop on the big scoop

They'll drop your scoop of ice cream right in front of you -- and make you pay for it -- at Cold Stone and Marble Slab, two new "creameries" in Winter Park. With more than 300 locations between them, such sloppiness is big business, drawing crowds of the lactose-tolerant who snap it up when servers slap great heaps of ice cream directly onto a refrigerated marble counter. Then they'll fold in any number of additions, from fruit to candy bars to Gummy Bears.

Marble Slab is in Winter Park Village, with Cold Stone directly across the street on South Orlando Avenue. Their ice creams are rich, comparable to Ben & Jerry's, made in each store from a sweet-cream mixture. Most flavors are good at both places, but the chocolate-dipped cones are much better at Marble Slab, and the honey ice cream is a knockout. Follow the crowds and make your own sugar-rush choice; you can't go far wrong.
