When: Sat., Dec. 13, 7 p.m. 2014
Everyone loves a good makeover story. Like that nerdy high-school girl who got popular by completely changing her outward appearance (shades of She’s All That), classical music has been working hard in recent years to shed its “only for the olds” reputation – whether it’s an orchestral arrangement of the Legend of Zelda theme or a flautist in an extremely short skirt, appealing to millennials is paramount. In the case of all-female string quintet Violectric, that youthful appeal is brought not just by their sexy looks, but also a genre-busting repertoire that gives classic rock the classical treatment. (Violectric’s version of “Baba O’Riley” is epic, and you’ll recognize Led Zep and Aerosmith songs as well as arrangements of Michael Jackson, Maroon 5 and Gaga.) For this holiday concert, augmented with keys and drums for a bigger sound in Lake Eola Park’s bandshell, expect a three-way collision of classical technique, holiday sing-alongs and radio favorites. This is classical for the actual youngs, not just the young at heart.
